Meet Our Animals! Golden Poison Dart Frogs

Golden poison dart frogs are found in a small area of western Colombia. This is one of the wettest rainforests in the world. They are also one of the largest dart frogs growing up to 5 centimeters.

The golden poison dart frog is one of the most poisonous animals on the planet. One frog possesses enough poison in its skin to kill up to 20,000 mice or 10 humans. The toxin works quickly leading to death in less than 10 minutes. They get their poison from the Melyrid beetles they eat in the wild. Instead of succumbing to the beetle’s toxins, they concentrate and store them to secrete in their skin. They were discovered in 1978.

Fun facts:
– A group of frogs is called an army.
– 3 color morphs are found in Colombia: mint green, orange, and orange black foot.
